The basketball club "Sokhumi" was founded in 1991 in Abkhazia before the outbreak of the armed conflict. Initially, the team was called "Sukhumi-91" and played its home games in the capital of the autonomous republic. Even during the war years, the club continued to exist and took part in the Georgian championship.
After the conflict ended, the team was on the verge of breaking up, but in late 1994 coach Vazha Kvaratskhelia revived it under a new name — "Kolkha".
From 1998, the team competed as "Sukhumi University", and from 2009 it adopted the name "Sokhumi", which it is known as today.
Club Development
Despite the lack of its own arena and stable infrastructure, the club continued to compete in the Georgian championship — both at youth and professional levels, including the Super League.
At various times, "Sokhumi" ranked among the top four basketball clubs in Georgia. The youth and junior teams became national champions several times. The club regularly provided playing opportunities to young players, including members of Georgia’s U-20 national team. The club was represented by players who competed for the Georgian national team and in European championships.

Our Training
We focus not only on technical skills, but also on the physical preparation of our players. Strength, speed, and endurance are developed through systematic training, helping the team play with greater confidence and better control the game on the court. Physical conditioning is what ultimately elevates a player from a good level to a truly high one.
